Step-by-step guide for creating your account as a Sole Trader

After downloading, installing and opening the Tide app, you will be presented with the Tide welcome screen. Tap Get started to begin the registration process.

To begin with, you will need to scan your ID or passport. To do this, place your form of identification on a level surface with good lighting and tap on the camera icon. If you’re having issues capturing a clear image, please refer to our guidance.

You will now be directed to a screen where all of your information has been populated from your ID. If any of the information is incorrect, you are able to edit it by tapping the edit icons. Tap Start ID check to proceed.

Once you have passed our identity checks, you will be shown this screen and will be able to proceed with registration.

Select the Sole Trader/ Partnership option. For a step-by-step guide to creating your account as a registered business, click here.

You will be directed to a page asking you to fill in your company information (your trading address will have been pre populated using your personal address). Once you have done this, tap Next.

Enter your email address and UK mobile number, then take a selfie. Your selfie will only visible to you and the Tide team (if you ever need to recover your account). Once you have completed this, tap Next.

Check the boxes to indicate when you have read and agreed to the member terms and account agreement. Tap Next.

Create a 5-digit security code. You will need to input this security code every time you log in to the app.

You will be shown your Sort Code and Account Number, which you can begin using right away. You can expect your Tide MasterCard to arrive at your trading address within 3-5 working days.

Looking to open a Tide account but there’s one thing stopping me. I have a very new company and the name is still up for debate. It’s currently a partnership but will eventually be a LTD company.

Can I open a Tide account with a temporary name?
Will the company name be printed on the card?
Will I be able to change the name easily?
Will I be able to convert the account to a LTD company account when the time comes?

Hi @tomsr! We are unfortunately not able to switch account types, therefore if you were to open an account now as a sole trader (we do not have partnership accounts available), you would need to open a new account once your company has been incorporated with Companies House. Rather than using the company name on our Tide Mastercards, we use the account holder’s name on the card. If you have any additional questions, feel free to email us at, and we would be happy to help!

We look forward to welcoming you to our Founder Member Community!
